When I first looked at the picture, it almost scared me--not because he is holding a gun, but because he has almost no facial expression. It's the idea of "blank stare." He shows no sign of emotions. However, I love the way this picture was set up because it almost seems like he is looking at you. I also think this picture has a strange "robot" feeling. I love how he is holding the gun at a point which can divide his body into two different sides. Overall, I think this is my favorite one. I also love the white background. Sometimes we do not realize how large of a role our facial expression plays in our daily life.
"The gaze becomes the “speaking eye” that surveys and describes everything; the eye becomes the “depository and source of clarity,” equated with knowledge which in turn is equated with power."
When I look at this picture I kind of want to know what made her really upset. It almost looks like she is thinking about her past and what had happened to her. You can see she is upset because it is a black background and a black dress. Black symbolizes "badness" or something sad. When I first look at her eyes, it almost seems like she wants to cry and she has these deep thoughts and does not have any answers to her questions. Everything in the picture is black, except her face and her chest. I found that really strange because I want to have more clues as to why she is upset. What made her upset? Also, in this picture, she is not looking into the camera. She is facing left and looking at something on her left.
"The definition of gaze has thus evolved from just a “look” into an “intent” look (i.e. the intent behind the gaze becomes crucial for its definition) and gaze can be thought of as a dynamic medium bridging the gap between art form [link] and social theory. Other words for seeing simply do not contain this same ability to integrate politics with art history"
This picture belongs Richard Avedon- I really like this picture, because there are so many people in the picture, however, they all are not looking into the camera. The picture looks complicated and there is mystery to it. I love how there is a woman in the center of the picture and I see almost all her body. However, you barely see other people's bodies. The only thing you can focus on is their eyes and face expressions. Another reason why I think this picture is unique is because you have so many different facial expressions present at the same moment. I love the background because it's white, so it creates this contrast between the background and people.
